NATHALIE GARBANI

The brain is a fascinating organ, which immense capabilities are still vastly unknown. The concept of neuroplasticity, defined in the Oxford dictionary as the ability of the brain to form new neuronal connections in response to learning, experience, or even trauma, is about 100 years old. The term, however, was not coined until the 1940s by a Polish neuroscientist who realized that neurons adjacent to those being fired triggered changes in the brain.

My professional life had been centered around health care and higher education. My creative activities helped me detach from the noise, the demand of my often-chaotic professional world, and focus back to myself as a meditative process.

My current creative endeavors are centered on drawing, painting and sculpting with copper wires and other natural found objects. I embrace the fluidity and grace of curved lines assembling to awaken what is dormant within the heart and soul, tapping into the plasticity, unused capabilities of the brain. I create for the process, the experience, the unconscious motivation, without envisioning in advance the final products. My journey is an ongoing positive transformation of my mind, my resilience, my attitude toward others, and even my health.

Paint, color pencils, markers, pastels, charcoal, copper wires and other recycled objects, along with canvas, paper and any paintable surface, become the extension of my thoughts allowing me to use apparently random lines to attain a final composition. Through my spontaneous practice I aim to invite the public to participate in the journey by tuning to the changes they feel internally, not just from what their eyes see.
